Legal Metrology

The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 repealed the Standard of Weights and Measures Act, 1976, and the Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Act, 1985 to set standards of weights and measures in trade and commerce and to guarantee the public the security and legality in the goods or services of a proprietor. Almost every entity whether in business or services use standards of weights and measure, which may include Unit, Mass, Length, Area, Capacity, Temperature and Volume. Use of weight and measure in accordance with standard unit of weight, measure and numeration is mandatory.

We provide guidance to the food businesses in relation to The Legal Metrology (Packaging Commodities) Rules, 2011 which applies to packaged products and specify how declarations must be made and what declarations must be included in a packaged commodity intended for sale.

BIS

BIS is the National Standard Body of India established under the BIS Act 2016 for standard formulation, product development scheme, the compulsory registration scheme, and sale of Indian standards among others. The ISI certification granted by BIS is generally voluntary in nature but it has been mandated by the Indian govt. for certain food products such as Infant formula, Milk cereal-based weaning food, Processed cereal-based weaning food, Follow up formula, Packaged drinking water, Packaged mineral water, Milk Powder, Skimmed Milk Powder, Partly Skimmed Milk Powder, Condensed Milk, Partly Skimmed and Skimmed Condensed Milk. The food business has to meet the requirements of these indian standards in order to get ISI certified.
